Politicians should enjoy the success of a low debt and low taxed economy along with the rest of us. If the government spends money wisely and effectively then less debt and tax will be required to achieve good results.

If spending is too high then the politicians should also be accountable and responsible for the lower income along with the rest of the people. The standard level of politician pay should be based of inflation/median wages as normal and then adjusted according the the tax and debt burden being placed on the economy as a whole. The higher tax and/or debt then the lower the politicians wages. It is well known that high taxes, excessive government debt and poor spending by government reduces economic growth and opportunities of the people. This idea will align the interests of the people with that of the politicians who make the spending decisions from the taxes paid by the people both now and in the future.
