My idea is to reduce traffic congestion by allowing personal vehicles to turn left at a red light with care, i.e. when there is no approaching traffic nor pedestrians.
Cars in the left lane are often waiting at a red light watching an empty road. Such a delay can interrupt traffic flow, particularly on two-lane roads where one lane is used for parking and the other for trams. By allowing cars to turn left on the red, delays caused by waiting for pedestrians are mitigated and cars no longer have to wait for a car turning right and stopping in the intersection. As Australia grows more populous, the roads grow busier, and mitigating congestion improves both quality of travel and trust in our public infrastructure.
