My idea is that in addition to teaching our kids to be able to find a job, we should be teaching them how to be financially responsible as young adults and to spark some early entrepreneurialism
In focusing on teaching people how to get a job, we are still following a model from the beginning of the industrial revolution, over 200 years ago. We need to create young people who have a greater sense of economic possibility and entrepreneurialism. We can do this by reviewing the education system to include a program for say Years 10-12 on becoming accountable for ourselves financially. This would include basics on personal finance, how and why we pay tax, how and why people borrow money, risks of being in debt, use of credit cards, starting a business, etc.
