My Big Idea My Big Idea.org.au To whom it may concern:

I wish to apply to My Big Idea with a vision “Looking towards the future” which “will be significant to the residents of Brisbane and Queensland. My Big Idea is to incorporate Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Airline Services who are aware of the equal opportunity employment principles to be subsides by the government to employ Indigenous people within each domestic airline service from administration, ground staff to aviation positions whilst proudly supporting Indigenous sports and sports persons by displaying a culturally appropriate logo at each airline service and on aircrafts. .

My name is Sharon Pickwick. I have a Bachelor of Social Work Degree from the University of Queensland. I am employed with Queensland Health in the department of mental health for 20 years.

In the late 90”s within my employment, I was responsible for a project traveling throughout Queensland submitting recommendations to employ Indigenous mental health professionals into community health services within urban, rural and remote areas of Queensland. At present, each community health service employs and supports Indigenous mental health professionals. Currently, I am working on a disaster & recovery project to service the local communities within Brisbane during a traumatic event or natural disaster.

I bring to My Big Idea a wealth of knowledge as a health professional, a resident of Australia and as an Aboriginal person on my mother’s side is Mununjali from the Beaudesert region of South East Queensland and my father’s side is Gurang from Discovery Coast Bundaberg.

Having a culturally appropriate domestic airline service could be based at a South East Queensland location: Maroochydore, Brisbane or Gold Coast to deliver a high quality customer service to the residents of Queensland, interstate and international tourists.

Linking into Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Services are 4 components I envision benefiting the residents of Brisbane/Queensland. .

• Tourism • Australia’s growing population • Employment • Today’s Youth is tomorrow’s baby boomers

“Welcome to Country Acknowledgement” “Welcome to Tourism”. As the Australian Aboriginal people were the first Australians, linking into Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Services can boost tourism with a holistic view of the Aboriginal culture, Aboriginal historical landmarks, artefacts, artwork and the people who can showcase tourism to both interstate and international tourists. With the new and additional flights from China, Hong Kong and Canada into the Gold Coast, Cairns and Brisbane this will booth tourism to various towns within Queensland and Australia. Another area of tourism is each year we celebrate the Indigenous Round in AFL, and the Indigenous NRL games which bring in supporters and tourists.

Australia is a growing country with individuals, couples and families who travel. Australia needs to plan for the future, Australia needs to decrease crime rate, decrease unemployment at the same time boost tourism, the Australian economy and employment.

Having a culturally appropriate domestic airline service can provide a foundation to support tourism, the Australian growing population, employment as today’s youth is tomorrow’s baby boomers.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to submit My Big Idea. I can be contacted on the below details.

Yours Sincerely Sharon Pickwick

“My Big Idea”:

The employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People within Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service

June 2016:

Introduction: My big idea…………..Looking towards the future. My big idea…………..Will be significance to the residents of Brisbane/Queensland.

Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service

• Tourism • Australia’s growing population • Employment • Today’s Youth is tomorrow’s baby boomers.

As the Australian Aboriginal People were the first nations of this country we need to acknowledge their culture, land, language, spirituality, the dreaming and heritage by introducing “A Big Idea” to establish the equal opportunity employment principles of Indigenous people to Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Services to be subsides by the government starting from Brisbane/Queensland before relocating to various locations across Australia.

This Domestic Airline Service will have an aircraft decorated with Aboriginal artwork to acknowledge the service and the people.

Linking into Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service: • Staff members will have Aboriginal material printed uniforms. • Staff members will receive the appropriate skills and training • Staff members will provide professionally high quality customer service. • On-board Aboriginal movies • On-board Aboriginal music • Bush tucker biscuits • Artefacts

Tourism: “Welcome to Country Acknowledgement”. Brisbane/ Queensland have a lot of cultural and historical sites, venues and towns which a small majority of Non-Indigenous people do not know.

The significant of having Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employed at a Domestic Airline Service can boost the Australian Tourism economy as Brisbane/Queensland has many significant landmarks including recognized and protected sacred sites which can boost tourism by bringing in interstate and international tourists.

Another area to boost tourism is having Aboriginal dancers and staff members in towns within urban, rural and remote areas of Queensland with “Welcome to Country acknowledgement”, cultural presentations on the history of the local town, the Aboriginal meanings for the town, the Aboriginal meanings of language and Aboriginal sightseeing tours whilst explaining the significant dates in Australian history: Sorry Day, Reconciliation Day, Mabo Day and NAIDOC celebrations. Each town has a historical story.

Australian growing population: With Australia’s growing population families, couples and individuals will need flights for work and travel. Brisbane/Queensland needs to be looking towards the future on how we can service the growing population, decrease crime rates, decrease unemployment rates and boost tourism and the economy.

Australia needs to be looking towards the future. Employee’s when going into transition to retirement will use their superannuation; with the high percentage of unemployment, future retirement persons will have limited funds for day to day living expenses as a high percentage of persons will be on government welfare benefits. Today’s youth, Gen Y adults and current school students need to require future employment.

Employment: Due to the high population of unemployment, Australia needs to be looking towards the future on how to decrease unemployment.

Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service could provide employment to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of Brisbane/Queensland in both the operational and professional streams, including ground staff, flight attendants and cabin crew and aviation staff.

Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service could offer the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employment in the areas of administration, maintenance staff and catering staff.

Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service could offer traineeships, cadetships, training and work experience servicing today’s youth, Gen Y adults and school students.

The employee will receive knowledge, support, professional development, training and provide a high quality of customer service.

Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service could link into the local towns and tourist centres to employ local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancers to provide cultural educational tours and presentations to tourists.

To present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander historical presentations to interstate and international tourists, Aboriginal and Non Aboriginal people need to be employed.

Todays’ youth is tomorrow’s baby boomers:  The youth, Gen Y adults and school students of today need employment and having Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service employing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to showcase tourism is the beginning. They will gain knowledge, build self- esteem, decrease unemployment rates, decrease crime rates- they have been offered employment and can look towards the future.

Conclusion: “My Big Idea” for Australia is to incorporate Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service from Brisbane/Queensland to employ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with the vision to expand to various cities within Australia.

With the employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people Qantas Airways Limited and/or Virgin Australia Domestic Airline Service can booth tourism in all regions of Brisbane/Queensland/Australia, with the culture, land, language, spirituality, the dreaming and heritage of each urban, rural and remote town ships, service the Australian growing population growth with employment and in all aspects of customer service. Australia is exhibiting the acknowledgement of the traditional owners through “Welcome to Country Acknowledgement” which happens at significant events, this can happen in all tourist locations from Brisbane/Queensland and across Australia.

“My Big Idea” for Australia can generate and boost the economy through Tourism, Australia’s growing population and employment -as Today’s youth is tomorrow’s baby boomers.

Solve challenges to shape Australia's tomorrow
