If we want young people to be engaged, they need to be literate and they need to be connected to their wider community. Libraries are not only great places for books and reading, they are social hubs, technology hotspots and learning spaces for all.

A library card at birth would prompt parents to take their children to storytime in the library. Research shows that 0-3 is the critical age for early literacy - waiting until school starts is leaving it too late. And by instilling the library habit from an early age, young people would continue to be part of these community hubs as they grew older, helping to build their sense of citizenship and social responsibility.
