The city of Ferguson, in Missouri, United States, has found a way to create additional recreational space at little to no cost.

CASE STUDY: Missouri's 'Sunday Parkways' initiative to fight childhood obesity

Studies show that children with regular access to parks and outdoor space are much less likely to develop obesity.

Every Sunday, somewhere in the city, children are given priority over cars. Taking it in turns, each week a different neighbourhood shuts it streets to traffic and turns them in to playgrounds for children. Residents are also invited to take to the streets to walk, bike and run.

It is part of Ferguson's 'Live Well' program which also hosts events that showcase the enjoyable, healthy, and sustainable aspects of fitness activities.
